Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) has become generally
accepted as de rigueur for manufacturers by its users, industry
analysts, and the press. However, the consistently high price
for full PLM systems has remained a barrier for many smaller
companies. In response to the perceived need for some kind of
PLM for small and medium-sized businesses (SMB’s), PLM vendors
have been delivering products targeted at them for some time.
This month ENOVIA SmarTeam (a Dassault Systemes company) has
announced its SmarTeam Design Express (SDE) for Multi-CAD, an
‘out-of-the-box’ Product Data Management (PDM) system that
promises scalability into PLM when needed. The product allows
viewing, sharing, control and collaboration on 3D CAD data
across a department.
SDE for Multi-CAD offers a set of standard scenarios,
preconfigured database models, and implementation and training
materials for ‘rapid’ deployment. In this case, ENOVIA says that
full installation and user training can occur in less than ten
days.
The product is standardized on .NET, which means it will only
work in a Windows desktop/server environment. The initial
product focuses on data management for the design team, but can
then be scaled up into a web-based interface that can be shared
with other departments that may need it.
Pricing remains a mystery for SDE for Multi-CAD. As with most
software companies, ENOVIA SmarTeam is shy of revealing product
pricing but does promise a ‘low total project cost’ for the
product.
Our Take
We were not able to review SDE for Multi-CAD in a true
production environment, so we have to do some reading between
the lines as to the promises and the actual delivery of the
product. That being said, we believe SDE for Multi-CAD has a
number of features that should be attractive to small and
medium-sized businesses
ENOVIA promises that the product will be easily scalable into
enterprise-wide operations, enterprise business systems, and
web-based interface tools. Given that the competition already
has web-based tools for PLM for small businesses, this seems
somewhat slow to the game, but may also be dependent on pricing,
which of course we don’t know!
