 | | CAE Monthly Magazine To Close By Roopinder Tara, Editor Penton will reduce CAE magazine to a quarterlyCLEVELAND, Ohio, October 4, 2001 - The CAD industry will soon lose an old standby as Computer-Aided Engineering magazine (CAE) prepares what will be its last monthly issue. CAE staff was notified of the news today that the magazine, a source of information about CAD and CAE trends, products and news since 1982, would end its long run with a combined November/December issue. Plans are to publish CAE quarterly from then on. CAE claims 60,000 subscribers. However, it has been noticeably thinner in recent issues. September's issue was 66 pages - with fewer "paid" pages - that is, pages with advertising. With most of its readers enjoying free subscriptions, CAE's income was almost entirely derived from ad revenue. CAE is published by Penton Media. a conglomerate with $400 million in annual revenue and 1,800 employees. Penton also publishes Machine Design, Design Mart, Medical Design News and other engineering magazines. It also owns the A/E/C Systems and Computers for Construction and other shows. Although Penton's website made no mention the demise of CAE at the time of this writing, the company may indeed be tightening its belt. CEO and Chairman Thomas Kemp warned investors on September 20 that annual financial results may fall below expectations, blaming current economic conditions in technology and manufacturing. In addition, five of its largest trades shows planned for this fall face low attendance in the wake of recent terrorist attacks. Internet World in New York has already been postponed. CAEnet.com, CAE magazine's complementary website, was recently redesigned and relaunched. There is no word on whether the website will stay active. |
