CAD Spaghetti regularly provides market intelligence from our database of nearly 20,000 UK CAD/CAM using sites. This month we have analyzed data from 5,000 companies from a cross section of industries to produce statistics on the operating systems they are using. Looking at the overall picture, Windows NT and earlier versions of Windows predominate among these companies.
When looking at the different business activities within the sample, there are some minor differences. Both Civil and Structural Engineering companies use Windows 2000 more than NT – however, earlier versions still predominate. Architecture companies show the expected tendency to use operating systems rather than Windows NT. There are also some differences by company size – smaller companies (less than 100 employees) tend not to have upgraded their earlier versions of Windows to 2000 or NT. The larger companies are significantly more reliant on Windows NT than any other system. Finally, when comparing by CAD package used, some clear differences in operating system usage arise.
This chart shows the dominance of early versions of Windows in companies using TurboCAD and AutoCAD. Companies using other packages tend to use Windows NT, with Windows 2000 being the least popular operating system of the three options. Companies using I-DEAS, CATIA and CADDS 5 are using Windows systems less, and are using Unix-based operating systems.
