Market Intelligence on Large Format Copiers/Scanners

From the March 2002 issue of

Each month CAD SPAGHETTI provides market intelligence from a database of nearly 20,000 UK CAD/CAM user sites. In the second part of our analysis of the use of large format devices, we examine the use of large format copiers, plan copiers and scanners.

We have analyzed current data from 19,000 CAD/CAM user sites, providing a representative sample of the total UK CAD/CAM market.

Large Format Copiers:
Analysis By Business Activity

Looking at the CAD/CAM market as a whole, there are currently 22% of sites that are using large format copiers, plan copiers or plain paper copiers (referred to as large format copiers for the remainder of this article - large format is defined throughout as A1 or larger).  There has been a slight increase since 1999, when 19% of sites were using these devices.

Of the industrial sectors, civil/structural engineering has the highest proportion of sites using these devices (40%), while electronic engineering has the lowest (13%).

Analysis By Site Size

Not surprisingly, the larger the site, the more likely they are to use a large format copier. Nearly two out of five with more than 5,000 staff use these devices.

Analysis By Number Of CAD Seats

The importance of having in-depth prospect data for suppliers is shown again when you look at the relationship between use of large format copiers and the number of CAD seats at sites. The proportion of sites using these devices is fairly even for sites with between six and a hundred CAD seats, and then rises to 43% for sites with over 100 seats.

Brand Leaders

The analysis of this market by brand is clouded somewhat by the fact that 17% of the people interviewed with responsibility for CAD functions didn't know what make of copier was used on their site.  The chart below shows the proportion of sites using particular brands of large format copier, with Océ and Xerox battling it out for the top spot.

Large Format Scanners

Only around 4% of sites in the UK CAD/CAM market are using stand-alone large format scanners.  This figure does not however include sites using multi-functional machines with scanning devices.

Analysis By Site Size

The large number of very small business in the overall CAD/CAM market also distorts this picture.  The chart below shows how the proportion of sites using these devices rises according to site size.

Analysis By Number Of CAD Seats

The chart below shows the expected correlation between the proportions of sites using large format scanners and the number of CAD seats at sites.
